David Small was able to make sense of his life thank to the Rabbit. Small was confused and denial about what was going on his dysfunctional family. When the Rabbit was trying to make Small to talk to him, he did not wanted to talk about nothing. So he had to tell him the cold way about how his parents did not tell him about his cancer and he had to find out on his own by a letter that his mother wrote to his grandma. Also, that he had been living in a live full of nonsense. Small had felt that his mother did cared about him because she never show a gesture of love to him. But the Rabbit confirmed and told him yes it true that your mother doesn't love you. I believe that truth that he need to start getting his life together and being open to talk to the Rabbit. Ever since that first talk they had he was able to communicate with Rabbit about any fears or doubts he had. The Rabbit gave back the freedom and strength that Small needed and was looking for.
"The Rabbit gave back the freedom and strength that Small needed and was looking for" --yes, I think you're right, and he did this by speaking the truth.
